Less than twelve months after ending their Mississippi State careers, former Bulldog pitchers Alan Johnson and Todd Doolittle will reunite this week in a four-game series between the pair's single-A ballclubs.
Johnson, who was MSU's Friday night starter in 2005, is expected to take the hill when his Asheville Tourists squad hits the field Monday night in Greensboro. The right-hander has had a successful start to the 2006 campaign, putting together a 3-1 record and 5.21 ERA in 7 starts. In 38 innings of work, the undrafted Birmingham native has struck out 44 while walking just 8. Johnson's most recent outing came against Charleston last week, and though he pitched a solid 5 innings, allowing only two earned runs and one walk while striking out eight, it resulted in a no-decision.
After starting on Saturdays for the Bulldogs last spring, Doolittle has done most of his work from the bullpen in 2006. The Meridian native, who also went undrafted last summer, has made 10 appearances for the Grasshoppers this year, two of them as the starter. The righty is 0-0 with a stellar 1.08 ERA. In 25 innings of action, Doolittle has allowed only 18 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 28 and walking just 10. He did not allow a run in any of his first eight appearances.
Game times for all four matchups, set for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, are 6:00 PM central. You can listen live to all four games for free online via the Grasshoppers' radio network.
